’300′ Has Record-Breaking Opening: $70 Million

2007 March 11

According to Yahoo (and everywhere else), 300 marched to the biggest March opening weekend ever, raking in over $70 million. Not even the most optimistic predictions came close to that number. But while 300 beat out Ice Age 2 (a PG-rated family-friendly movie) for the March record, it still sits behind Jesus Whipped and Crucified ($84 mil) and Sci-Fi Jesus Reloaded ($92 mil) for the biggest opening ever for an R-rated film.

Frank Miller is officially the savior of the R-rated action movie. Between the success of Sin City and this astounding weekend for 300, studios are only going to continue ripping films straight out of his comic book pages. Not to mention that Batman Begins was influenced by his “Batman: Year One”. How amazing is it that a graphic novelist is now one of the most influential people in Hollywood?

I promise that this will be the last of my 300 gushing for a while. In fact, I believe the film is in for a MASSIVE drop-off next weekend. I only know one person who was interested in the movie who did not see it this weekend. So it’ll be interesting to see what happens. Either way, the movie has already made back its production budget ($60 mil) and then some.
