iPod Shuffle Gets New Colors: This is News?

I recently discovered the site digg – a social networking website of sorts that allows members to digg, or vote, for worthy news stories and also comment on them. Apparently, Apple releasing new colors for their iPod shuffle is a groundbreaking event. Not only that, there’s another story on the front page just about the orange version, because it’s the first orange iPod that Apple has released. Click here if you want to see a dozen high-res close-up pictures of it. Are you shitting me?

But maybe it’s working – it actually crossed my mind to buy a shuffle for the first time. Maybe I haven’t been keeping up with the various iterations of the iPod enough, but I didn’t realize that the 1 GB model was now $79. My 2nd gen iPod is completely broken and I’m starting to miss having some sort of mp3 player. Now I’m a pretty cheap person and I look for deals all the time, and $79 isn’t too bad a price for a miniscule device that will hold probably about 150 of my mp3s at any moment. Trust me, this is not because of the new colors. It’s because it’s 20 bucks cheaper than I thought, and I only clicked on a link to Apple’s site due to the buzz around these new models. 20 bucks is a lot of money – I can buy an awesome PS2 Greatest Hits game with that. I have to check out the competitors though. I bet there’s better deals out there, even if they aren’t as sleek looking as the iPod shuffle.

So I guess this was Apple’s response to Microsoft releasing Windows Vista today. That’s a story for another post, so you can check out my friend Chris’s inital impressions of Vista.
