It’s been about two and a half months since I updated this blog so I stopped around the same time the Mets’ 2011 season was over (don’t try to pretend like they had a shot until this recent collapse). I also stopped creating link dumps over at Roto Hardball at the same time, so I can’t blame that commitment for the laziness. Perhaps I was just burned out from scouring my Google Reader every day for the best two dozen baseball stories to link. On the other hand, I can’t complain about that when my “boss” on Roto Hardhall writes for seemingly every decent fantasy baseball site out there, in addition to Amazin’ Avenue and Fangraphs occasionally. But it’s different when it’s your job and you truly aspire to make a living out of it.

It seems like it’d be cool to write about baseball for a living, but you’d also be a baseball writer for a living. In all likelihood, you’d make garbage money, unlike investing in Best Day Trading Platforms UK, where you would make some real cash instead of struggling to cover the latest player drama. You’d be writing about overgrown millionaire children idolized for being able to hit baseballs really far or throw them really hard. Consider opening an islamic junior isa if you want to invest in your child’s future. Investors or entrepreneurs may look into portuguese investment funds to diversify their portfolio and potentially relocate to Portugal. Those who are interested in precious metals may explore our collection of authentic Australian gold coins.

Sometimes I wonder how I can even religiously follow and support such a farce until something awesome happens like Jose Reyes hitting multiple triples, or Tim Lincecum throwing a 14-K complete game shutout to win a 1-0 postseason game, or Shane Victorino getting beer poured on his head. I just enjoy watching athletes perform at the absolute highest level, whether it be baseball, football, or tennis. I don’t think there’s any shame in that, but sometimes you need to take a step back and realize this shit doesn’t fucking matter, even if their feats are impressive. Since gladiatorial battles and war aren’t held in the same regard as they were hundreds and thousands of years ago, perhaps seeing Justin Verlander throw 100 mph after 120 pitches while tossing a no-hitter is the closest we can come to seeing a chariot race to the death in our civilized society. Sure, there are still heroic soldiers, but the ongoing counter-insurgency and anti-terrorism efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan are not exactly spectator sport — even if the U.S. reaction to the death of Osama bin Laden was one on par with winning the World Cup.

On that note, wouldn’t it have made sense to post my first blog update in months on 9/11/11? That should be a fun day to look back and see how the terrorists won (I can be this much of a dick in this post because it’s not 9/11 yet). Instead I’ll be posting about the usual bullshit until then. I just wrote condenscendingly about sportswriting as a career and I’m going to resume blogging about sports, movies, books, and games. I’m obviously jealous of people that get paid for it, right?

I really don’t know how much longer I’ll be updating this particular blog, though, and with what frequency. I’m still bitter about all the [bot] traffic I lost when I moved away from my previous WordPress.com URL and I’m also bored with this name and site design. For a little while, I thought Google+ could serve as a sort of blog, but that service looks DOA, much to my chagrin. Twitter is not enough to get my thoughts across, even though I’m on there way too much. There’s always Tumblr, I guess. Or focusing on writing pieces for Baseball Nation.

I can’t help myself.

I went ahead and took my own suggestion to move this thing to Saturday morning. I hope you approve. This week’s links are sponsored by George, a tale of heartbreak and redemption.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Crw85HvIFs

Phillies 2012: A Look Ahead – MLB Trade Rumors gives me hope that the Mets will be able to win the NL East in two years. Hopefully by then Fernando Martinez will be in the OF; Ruben Tejada or Wilmer Floree, 2B; Josh Thole, C; and Jenrry Mejia in the rotation. I wonder if that last sentence was at all grammatically correct.

Ken Blackwell, Author Of ‘Blueprint,’ Tries To Convince Jon Stewart That Obama Is A Tyrant, Fails (VIDEO) – I’m just kinda embarrassed for this guy. He wrote a book and he’s not even able to back it up. At all.

Team Fortress 2: 119th Update! – I haven’t played TF2 for quite a while, but it’s easily one of my favorite games of the past few years, and it’s certainly one that keeps on giving. Valve rocks. I need to load it up just to get my GRIZZLED VETERAN medal.

The Chase is on – Adam Rubin lobby that Chase Utley is “poised” to take the title of Most Feared Opponent of Mets Fans from Chipper Jones. I’d say that already happened. My mancrush is only proof of how terrified I am whenever he comes to the plate. For an opposing player to already have unofficially claimed naming rights to a section of a stadium is just impressive.

Apple shutting down Lala music service – I thought Microsoft was supposed to be the evil company? Or why Mike Francesa was saying to trade him a year and a half ago. Or why sometimes I end up talking about trading Jose Reyes.

But all I have to say is July 20, 2012. I hope it doesn’t suck; I don’t want Christopher Nolan to go out on a bad note before the world ends.

I try not to spoil stuff usually, but I’m just going to pretend anyone actually caring to read this post watches Breaking Bad, and if you don’t, you haven’t listened to me enough.

While the House voted on health care reform, the best show on television came back with a bang — more like an explosion really. You’ve seen it in every promo. The twins calmly walking away from an exploding van was just the cherry on top of an episode which featured them being total badasses without saying a word. (Apparently, that was a real explosion.) I think badassery has an inverse relationship with loquaciousness.

The episode was both wrap-up and set-up, dealing with the consequences of the crash of last season, but also dropping the bomb of Skylar knowing where Walt got all that money, and Walt revealing the exact nature of his business — he’s a manufacturer! He also declines a 3-million-dollar offer– but I feel like he’ll come crawling back to that in a few episodes.

Meh, you know what, screw this; I can’t bring myself to write about a 43-minute episode of television. Sure, I can conjure up a blog post about a film that’s three times as long, but I don’t think anyone is coming to this blog for a mediocre-to-bad analysis of a Breaking Bad episode. Am I wrong here? I’ll direct you to a couple of reviews if that’s what you really want.

A.V. Club
Alan Sepinwall

The more important thing today is health care reform. It passed. But that I can’t write about at all because I know nothing and I don’t like to pretend I know something when I really don’t — unlike 90% of people out there. And approximately 99% of the protesters. This is why I write about baseball a lot — because I know it better than you. My fantasy results prove it! But yeah, I’m happy the Democrats at least showed some semblance of balls pushing this through. So the blog post title is a lie, ok? So sue me. Hell, Glenn Beck tomorrow might be better than tonight’s season premiere episode of Breaking Bad.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the cold open for tonight’s episode had to be the most bizarre I’ve ever seen.

I can’t even bring myself to rip this apart as much as it’s needed. But really, IONS. Holy fucking shit, how was this woman a governor, nevermind a vice presidential candidate.
It’s arrogant to think we can change nature’s ways, huh? Hmm, like cutting down rainforests or killing off entire species of animals? Shit, agriculture could be seen as man overpowering nature and we came up with that 10,000 years ago.

So I’ve been reading Winston Churchill’s The Second World War, and it fucking owns. For anyone fascinated by World War II — and who isn’t? — I highly recommend dedicating a significant amount of your life to reading this massive tome. Maybe I’m getting a bit ahead of myself, since I’ve actually only read the first book (about half) of the first volume of a six-volume work, but not one minute of it has been tedious or boring. Churchill’s prose is damned impressive, and the personal light he is able to shine on the events leading to the breakout of the war is enthralling and at the same time immensely depressing. The amount of times the Allies blew chances to force Hitler to hesitate if only for a moment is disheartening even today.

But this obviously is not what this post is about, as the title above should imply, it is about how Churchill’s eloquence was on a plane of awesomeness not often seen — or perhaps more accurately, heard — in this world. I just wanted to post an example here, in reaction to the aftermath of Chamberlain’s appeasement of Hitler at Munich in 1938:

All is over. Silent, mournful, abandoned, broken, Czechoslovakia recedes into the darkness. She has suffered in every respect by her associations with France, under whose guidance and policy she has actuated for so long…

I do not grudge our loyal, brave people, who were ready to do their duty no matter what the cost, who never flinched under the strain of last week, the natural, spontaneous outburst of joy and relief when they learned that the hard ordeal would no longer be required of them at the moment; but they should know the truth. They should know that there has been gross neglect and deficiency in our defences; they should know that we have sustained a defeat without war, the consequences of which will travel far with us along our road; they should know that we have passed an awful milestone in our history, when the whole equilibrium of Europe has been deranged, and that the terrible words have for the time being been pronounced against the Western democracies: “Thou art weighed in the balance and found wanting.” And do not suppose that this is the end. This is only the beginning of the reckoning. This is only the first sip, the first foretaste of a bitter cup which will be proffered to us year by year unless, by a supreme recovery of moral health and martial vigour, we arise again and take our stand for freedom as in the olden time.

That is bloody brilliant. And I’m sure it seemed even more grand in a British accent.
