Once the Heat emerged victorious in the Eastern Conference Finals almost a week ago (NBA scheduling is the worst), I made sure to declare my rooting interests for the Finals. I’ve probably been rooting for the Mavs this entire time, as the only other legitimate options were the Bulls and Thunder, two young teams that look to have plenty of opportunities to challenge whichever team becomes champs this year. I say “probably” due to my tepid interest in the NBA playoffs until now. The Spurs and Lakers got knocked out earlier than expected, and Chris Paul put on a spectacular show in a losing effort (unlike Derrick Rose), but nowadays the only sport I really care about is baseball. Undoubtedly, Roto Hardball and my self-imposed pressure to know as much as possible have me neglecting all other sports. Hell, there’s a Djokovic-Federer French Open semifinal coming up and I doubt I’ll watch it. To keep track of baseball as a whole, majors and minors, while also trying to watch his own team as much as possible, is probably analogous to having two girlfriends. And being a Mets fan means neither of them is having sex with me.

But to get back to basketball, Dirk Nowitzki needs to be perfect for the Mavs to even have a chance in this series. He needs to put up numbers like he did in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, where he scored 48 points on 15 field goal attempts. That’s like driving in 11 runs in 3 at-bats. He could have taken 15 three-point shots, hit all of them, and he still wouldn’t have had as many points. Sure, 12-15 shooting from the floor is awesome, but to top that off with a 24-24 performance at the free throw line is just unfair. But then again, having to play against two of the top three players in the NBA is even more unfair.

This will probably end up being Dirk’s best chance at a championship, barring devastating injuries to either LeBron James or Dwayne Wade within the next year. How could you not root for a guy who’s been as consistently great the past decade as anyone not named Tim Duncan? A player whose unique combination of size and skill has made basketball scouts dream about other massive Euros, only to be terribly disappointed. A player who was so close to a championship only a few years ago, and has since been unfairly labeled a choker.

How could you not root for a player who has been with one team his entire career, a player who practically created the franchise himself? LeBron could have traveled the same path, but he decided to become part of a three-headed monster in Miami instead of carving out his own competitive legacy. If there were one player who could have single-handedly led a team to a championship in this era, it would have been LeBron. Dirk may be at times the most efficient and unstoppable offensive force in the league, but LeBron can do just about anything on the basketball court when he wants to. Derrick Rose, the 2011 “MVP”, turned into a high schooler when LeBron was matched up against him. Yet in hindsight, perhaps it’s unfair to treat the situations of LeBron and Dirk equally, as their owners certainly weren’t equal. Mark Cuban invested in building a team around Dirk, while LeBron was fed scrubs that he managed to transform into legitimate NBA players.

Maybe I’m still bitter that the Knicks are left with the volume scorer that is Carmelo Anthony instead of the all-around monster that is LeBron James. Maybe the thought of LeBron in a Knicks uniform still makes me want to jump on the bandwagon that never came around. Maybe I just want to see one of the greatest players of his generation finally get his due.

Go Mavs. Go Dirk.

At 9 PM EDT, LeBron James will announce which NBA city he has picked to rest his throne. It will be the most important television event since man walked on the moon. Your grandchildren will ask you where you were when King James made his decision. They’ll ask you just how lazy Stuart Scott’s eye was on that fateful day. They’ll wonder if Charles Barkley missed it because he just wanted a blowjob. It will be put in history books alongside the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and the fall of Rome.

Of course, as with any earth-shattering event, the rumors have been swirling and changing every 12 hours or so. It always seemed like LeBron was leaning towards staying in Cleveland, but then that disappointing exit in the playoffs changed everyone’s perception, apparently. Chicago became a real possibility. New York was always talked about — and living in New York has magnified it 100x for me. Miami was thrown out there. Even New Jersey and Los Angeles (Clippers) were mentioned.

I spent most of the day today with a chubby because the rumors were pointing toward New York. I tried my best to remain pessimistic, but I couldn’t contain my excitement. LEBRON JAMES A KNICK. I would have to get my Knicks crap back out of the closet. Cleveland would go back to being the most depressing city this side of Detroit. Chicago would have to settle for rewatching games from the Jordan Era.

But now the internet is exploding over reports saying LeBron is joining Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade in Miami. He already was inspiring this type of vitriol just by making such a big deal out of his decision:

It doesn’t matter where he opts to go. If he goes to Chicago, he’s a cocksucker. If he goes to Miami, he’s a goddamn cocksucker. Even if he goes back to Cleveland, he’s a goddamn cocksucker. He’s a self-aggrandizing sack of shit, and ESPN is a bunch of pussy-whipped enablers for giving him a free hour of airtime tomorrow night and inevitably using 55 minutes of it to let Stu Scott give him a rimjob.

So imagine how much people will hate him if he goes to Miami and forms an unbeatable Big Three? Here’s a taste:

Now, the Association looks like a joke, a place where three individuals have held seemingly everyone hostage. New York’s rebuilding is a sideshow. Prokhorov’s participation in Russia’s insidious spying mission in America is something to track tepidly. Who even cares what the Clippers do now? The whole league has been submarined by LeBron, whose hubris these last few weeks has been ugly and costly. Outside of Miami, who will be left rooting for LeBron, especially after his made-for-TV drama? An NBA diehard, I am so disillusioned. This doesn’t feel right or fun. This feels terrible.

I really recommend reading that entire rant, as it’s absolutely spot-on and demolishes LeBron much more effectively than calling him a cocksucker a half-dozen times.

As an objective observer, I really believe LeBron should stay in Cleveland and build his legacy there — but I’m not objective. I want him to come to the Knicks, even if he is a cocksucker.

I barely watched LeBron James’ possible final game with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Â I was watching a close Mets game (which only ended in frustration), and then I started playing Starcraft II after it was obvious that the game was over. But now the begins the debate of where LeBron goes after turning the ball over nine times in an elimination game in the second round of the NBA Playoffs. Explore the website of betflix if you want to place bets on your favorite NBA teams.

The Celtics fans in the crowd obviously had an answer, judging by what they were chanting: New York Knicks. New York Knicks.

I hope they’re right.

This edition of REAL TALK is presented by the realest talk of the past week.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34mHZgP9vkc

- I haven’t played the Starcraft II beta in weeks. And I’ve procrastinated from writing a blog post about it for over a month. I’m just reminded of why I didn’t play the original as much I convince myself sometimes — because the game is totally unforgiving and makes me want to smash my mouse into my desk over and over. I don’t feel like watching replays to be competitive.

- Ike Davis is the New York Mets savior of the moment. With two hits, he’s at least off to a better start than Fernando Martinez last year. They still won’t finish above .500.

- The Twitter consensus is in: The Bourne Identity is the best Bourne movie. Paul Greengrass must be devastated by this news.

- Chuck probably should have just ended with its episode two weeks ago, unless somehow the last batch of episodes are extremely awesome. But I guess it’s NBC’s fault. Like always.

- I am a scrub-burning machine. While friends drink way too much around me, my grittiness and determination when it comes to sending smoke into the atmosphere is unparalleled. So scrappy.

- Someone I follow on Google Reader keeps sharing articles about Inception. I scroll by all of them because I might as well stay as spoiler-free as possible if I’m already set on seeing it opening weekend.

- Albums from The Black Keys, The National, The Gaslight Anthem, and some other bands I never really listened to leaked today or yesterday or something. I will listen to them and post the best shit in resurrected Song of the Week posts.

- I still haven’t watched last week’s Lost episode. And I thought I enjoyed the previous episode. I guess not?

- The leaked iPhone prototype — combined with iPhone OS 4.0 — seems pretty freaking sweet. Come to Verizon, please.

- LeBron James is really good at basketball. I need to work on my vertical leap just in case he comes to the Knicks. Don’t want to miss the bandwagon.

- I can’t remember ever seriously using index cards in my entire academic career. Yet I recently made a set just to learn some world capitals for pub trivia. What am I doing with my life.
