And then there's stuff like Europa Universalis that makes Civ look like Animal Crossing. I saw someone describe Starcraft as action-RTS, and I think that sums it up well. I haven't even played past the first mission in SP, so I have no idea what you're talking about with the laser hah. Hotkeys are definitely essential. I force myself to use them for everything. And I played random a lot, so it's three races to learn. But they save an invaluable amount of time. And it's way to fun to just smash Z,Z,S,S,Z,D,D to warp in zealots, stalkers, and dark templar as Protoss. Oh yeah, Civ games are definitely more complex. I've only done the single player so far, I'm scared about the multiplayer. My proudest hotkey abilities are pretty much control and shift select. I'm trying to use the single player to get used to more hotkeys, but it never goes beyond that (and pressing F2 to control the giant fucking laser).
